“You know, when this all started I thought that, if I made it through, the experience would somehow change me. I don’t think it has. I don’t think I want it to.”
“Ordinary Love” is a simple, but eloquently expressed story about when someone you love gets cancer. The film follows every step of the discovery from denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. However it was stars of the film Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville that brilliantly breathed life into this story about ordinary people.
The best stories are those that are told from the heart and such was the case with “Ordinary Love”. Written by Owen McCafferty based the story on his own experience with his wife who suffered breast cancer. Tom (Liam Neeson) and his wife (Lesley Manville) are your very ordinary couple that live in England. They take walks and they share breakfast every morning. Despite being ordinary in their daily affairs, they are extraordinary in their love for each other. The story movies unlike any Hollywood production, it moves with subtle intention. This makes the story feel very real. In life, the best things are usually made simply. We experience this in “Ordinary Love” as there is no bit of fluff or melodramatic elements. It is genuinely just a husband and wife dealing with what life offers us.
Liam Neeson, an actor synonymous with his role in the dramatic action thriller “Taken” has taken some strides to step away from that persona and shows us his softer side in “Ordinary Love”. Although a beloved actor we appreciate Neeson for his skill, but I think all of the attention should be on Lesley Manville. Lesley was absolutely incredible in her portrayal of woman on the brink of losing it all. The depth of which she was able to reach and the way she masterfully touched our hearts only made us fall back in love, with love.
It felt great to watch a movie that portrays a realistic perspective of love. It accurately depicts the difficulty a spouse experiences while being with someone stricken by such an illness. This movie will only inspire you to love better. Take a moment out of your day to check out “Ordinary Love” I think you’ll find an greater appreciation for love after watching this beautiful film.
